Well, day two has been great! Katelyn slept from 8pm to 7am and only woke up once for a small bottle at about 2:45. She was up long enough to drink the bottle and doze off again! Praise the Lord!!!
She woke up and didn't start crying. We gave her a bottle and then headed down to breakfast and she ate some congee (it's like a soupy over cooked rice that babies here love) and she discovered that she loves gerber puffs and Cheerios. It's actually entertaining to watch her.
We spent three hours this morning going to the Civil Affairs office, the notary and the police station. After all this was over our adoption became final on China's end. We got to meet Katelyn's orphanage direcetor and assistant director at the Civil Affairs office and they were happy to see that she was doing well. They are going to let us come and visit the orphanage sometime later this week. They brough the original note that was found on Katelyn and we couldn't have it but they let us take a picture of it. They answered the questions I had sent in her care package and gave us the disposable camera back. We feel like we have more information now about Katelyn's early months. Her nickname was Wan Wan at the orphanage.
After all the running around was over we went to one of the restaurants in the hotel for lunch. It was then that we saw Katelyn's personality bust out. She's been super alert, but hesitant about the whole situation. She smiled once last night at dinner but that was it....well today at lunch she had our whole table rolling. We were sitting with our new friends Leslie and Steve from Arizona and their new baby Karlie. Katelyn was laughing and playing. She was so intent on her Cheerios. She LOVES to eat and mealtime is when she is at her finest. She squishes up her face when she's gumming cheerios....SO CUTE! Sometimes she kind of closes one eye so I've been calling her Popeye. :) When we left lunch she started melting down and then she fell right asleep for her afternoon nap. She can go from a high to a low in an instant...crazy baby. She took a morning nap while I had her in the carrier at the Civil Affairs office. She's great at eating and sleeping...Josh's girl...and when she wants to be fed, you better feed her and it better be quick!...again, Josh's girl.
I went to the grocery store with part of the group this afternoon and Josh and Steve took the two girls down to the cafe and had coffee...the guys, not the babies. Oh my gosh...I have never seen so many people or experienced being in a car like I have here. I'm going to bring the video camera with me one day because I can't even explain it. Oh and the grocery store was definitely a cultural experience. I must admit that by the end of the day I'm tired of being stared at. Blondes are rare around these parts and there isn't the international flavor there is in Beijing. When we're out with the baby, everyone is watching us. I'm kind of ready to get home and blend in. Although I'm still loving China.
Katelyn did great for two hours with daddy. She got to test out the stroller (they brought one to our room to use...this hotel is awesome! They brought us a crib, a baby bath tub and a stroller to use while we're here.)
Katelyn ate steamed egg, part of a bottle, watermelon, noodles, and cheerios at dinner. She rocks. Then we experienced the first poop and the first bath....in that order. She's rolling right along and seems to be adjusting well. She doesn't like to be put down...she wants us near. She's really strong willed. Her body is strong and she has a lot of muscle, but developmentally, she's still not rolling over on her own, sitting up, crawling...any of that. I think in the orphanage they're in those little walkers, being held or in the crib. I don't think they really put the babies on the floor. I think culturally they think the floor is cold and dirty. So I think she'll pick up speed once we get her home. Her two bottom teeth are coming in and she wants to chew on our t-shirts all the time. We'll have to get her a teething cloth. Her 12 month clothes are fitting just fine.
After her bath I walked around the room rocking her for about 10 minutes. She just stared at me and then fell asleep...right at 8pm. I love this two naps and to bed by 8 in her crib. Excellent start.
We are just able to post on the blog but can't see the blog once it's posted. So if you're leaving comments, I will read them all when we get home, but if you want to tell us something now, send it to my email. Melissaandjoshmcd@netzero.com
Tomorrow we're off to the park.
